Professor Sandra Thompson

Professor Sandra Thompson is a public health physician who is Director of the Combined Universities Centre for Rural Health (CUCRH), Western Australia's only University Department for Rural Health (UDRH). She commenced in this position in 2010 when she took up the appointment of Chair of Rural Health at the University of Western Australia. CUCRH has offices based in Geraldton, Perth and Port Hedland. She worked at the Centre for International Health at Curtin from 2004-2010. From a background in communicable disease control, she has been predominantly engaged in Aboriginal health issues including the growing problem of prevention and management of chronic diseases. This includes the need to recognise and address community trauma and depression as part of chronic disease care. Her research interests include strengthening primary care through quality improvement, capacity building, developing and strengthening Indigenous-mainstream partnerships, attraction and retention of health professionals in rural areas and the research-policy interface.
