An integrated, culturally competent approach to incorporating mental health in chronic disease management

Building on the work we have done with the cardiovascular and chronic care team at the AMS Western Sydney, we have used an action research framework, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods, to:
1) Develop a culturally appropriate motivational interviewing intervention to facilitate smoking cessation in Indigenous Australians;
2) Identify culturally appropriate and acceptable psychometric screening measures for depression, stress, and anxiety within chronic disease management model;
3) Identify culturally appropriate and acceptable adjunctive stress management interventions to facilitate mental wellbeing and augment smoking cessation;
4) Establish a model of intervention appropriate for addressing cardiovascular risk reduction in Indigenous women, focusing on psychological and social factors
